Professor He Xiaoshun's team at the First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, pioneered the ischemia-free organ transplan
Recently, Professor He Jianxing's team at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University successfully transplanted a lung from a genetically modified pig into a brain-dead recipient and maintained normal ventilation for nine days. The results were published in the journal "Nature Medicine" and hailed by the international scientific community as a "milestone in xenotransplantation."

Professor He's team employed the "tubeless" technology in lung transplantation to complete in four hours what traditionally takes six to eight hours, pioneering a new approach to multi-organ transplantation. They have completed a total of 829 lung transplantations and 22 combined heart-lung transplantations. The recent transplantation of a gene-edited pig lung (knocking out genes related to immune rejection) marks a transition of xenogeneic lung transplantation from "theoretically feasible" to "clinical trials."
Professor He Xiaoshun's team at the First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, pioneered the ischemia-free organ transplantation (IFOT) technology, providing oxygen and blood to ex vivo organs through machine perfusion, overcoming the challenges of ischemia–reperfusion injury. Their findings were published in international journals. The approach to organ preservation ex vivo even enabled a pig's head to blink and breathe after being detached, offering new strategies for cardiac arrest resuscitation.

Guangdong has never ceased exploring organ transplantation. In 2003, Shenzhen in Guangdong province introduced the country's first regulations on organ donation. In 2011, the province established China's first Organ Procurement Organization (OPO). Today, Guangdong has 21 organ transplantation medical institutions, the most in the country, with leading kidney and liver transplant volumes. Its heart and lung transplant techniques are internationally advanced, and for 13 consecutive years, it has ranked first nationally in deceased organ donations, with cumulative donations accounting for more than one-fifth of the national total.
