From July 31st to August 3rd, the dance drama "Odes to Heroes" was staged for four consecutive nights in Beijing, sparking a cultural wave that showcased the richness of Lingnan heritage. Having already completed 38 performances across 19 cities across China, "Odes to Heroes" underwent a fresh round of refinement this June and made its Beijing debut in a newly upgraded 3.0 version. Departing from conventional linear storytelling, the production adopts a multi-dimensional, multi-temporal narrative structure.

The story of "Odes to Heroes" follows a young man whose father disappears after leaving for Southeast Asia, leaving his mother to raise him alone. On Lantern Festival night, the son strikes the Yingge drumsticks left behind by his father, triggering a journey through a dreamlike realm. Amid the fog of war and memory, he comes to understand his father's sense of duty to the nation, helps ease his mother's grief, and experiences his own awakening and transformation.

Zhang Yi, General Manager of Guangzhou Song and Dance Theater and producer of "Odes to Heroes", articulated the production's core message: "The entire dance drama centers on a young man's journey of growth and transformation. Two key themes anchor the story:cultural inheritance and patriotic devotion." The recurring image of "three rivers flow into the sea, yet oneletter brings the tide back" vividly portrays theoverseas Chaoshan people's deep longing for their ancestral homeland. It also serves as a shared cultural symbol for Chaoshan people worldwide.

Rooted in the Yingge dance, the production seamlessly weaves in a wide array of Lingnan cultural elements, including Chaozhou wood carving, iron branch puppets, Chao embroidery, beef meatballs, and oil paper lanterns. Perhaps most striking is the drama's theme song, which creatively employs Chaoshan dialect. These cultural components transcend geographic and temporal boundaries, coming together to form a brilliant, shared tapestry of Chinese civilization.
