TMTPOST -- NetEase Youdao, a search engine released by Chinese internet company NetEase, has integrated AI model DeepSeek-R1 into its whole suite of AI-powered educational applications. This move marks a major step in enhancing the AI-driven learning experience for students and educators alike.
Among the key integrations, the AI learning assistant "Youdao Xiao P" now leverages DeepSeek-R1’s advanced reasoning and analytical capabilities to optimize its personalized Q&A functions. The enhanced AI can now provide deeper insights and more precise problem-solving approaches, greatly improving the accuracy and effectiveness of educational support.
Additionally, NetEase Youdao's other AI-driven products, including Hi Echo, Youdao Zhiyun, and QAnything, will also integrate DeepSeek's reasoning capabilities. These products are scheduled for progressive updates in the coming weeks. Furthermore, NetEase Youdao is set to launch new intelligent hardware products powered by this AI, alongside the release of "Youdao Xiao P 2.0."
DeepSeek unveiled its revolutionary inference model DeepSeek-R1 on January 20. Demonstrating capabilities on par with top global AI models, it has allegedly reduced API usage costs by 90%-95%, making it a game-changer in the AI industry.
NetEase Youdao CEO Zhou Feng on Wednesday shared an analysis of DeepSeek’s programming capabilities via his personal WeChat blog, emphasizing that "DeepSeek’s major advantage lies in its coding abilities."
Over the past year, Zhou has promoted AI-assisted programming within the company. With the release of DeepSeek V3 and R1, NetEase Youdao conducted extensive evaluations of their functionalities. Zhou highlighted DeepSeek's unique strengths in code quality, language support, and cost efficiency, positioning it as one of the most promising AI assistants for complex programming tasks.
Zhou believes that the maturity of AI models in science and technology will significantly expand AI applications in education and other industries. NetEase Youdao had predicted rapid advancements in AI-driven STEM education, but the emergence of DeepSeek-R1 exceeded expectations, arriving within just a few months after the prediction.
This development is crucial for educational applications. The most challenging aspects of teaching and problem-solving rely heavily on advanced AI models. They have strong confidence in the potential of R1 and other reasoning models, Zhou noted.
Internal evaluations at NetEase Youdao indicate that DeepSeek-R1 has achieved an impressive 88% accuracy rate in Youdao's K-12 test dataset, further reinforcing the company’s commitment to fully integrating the model.
DeepSeek-R1’s advancements are driven by robust computational infrastructure, an efficient DualPipe training framework, low-precision training innovations, and optimized model architecture, said Duan Yitao, Chief Scientist at NetEase Youdao. These enhancements have significantly improved performance while keeping operational costs under control, Duan added.
Duan also noted that DeepSeek-R1’s use of reinforcement learning marks a departure from traditional PRM (Probabilistic Roadmap Method) methods. By directly rewarding outcome-oriented results, AI has developed more efficient reasoning skills and even initial self-reflection abilities, setting a new industry standard.
AI-powered tutoring and problem-solving remain a key focus for educational AI applications. NetEase Youdao has already made strides in this area with its intelligent hardware products, including popular Youdao Dictionary Pen X7 and X7 Pro.
Previously, the company pioneered "Zi Yue-O1," China’s first AI inference model capable of step-by-step explanations, and made it open-source. In 2023, NetEase Youdao also launched "Zi Yue," the country’s first large-scale educational AI model, integrating it into both software and hardware solutions.
