Shanghai Port witnessed a significant surge in container throughput in the months of April and May, despite global trade complexities.

Bolstered by streamlined operations and technological advancements, the port managed to reduce berthing times even with a sudden influx of vessels.

New statistics reveal that Shanghai Port handled 4.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in April, a 7.7-percent increase year-on-year, and 4.65 million TEUs in May, a 10.2-percent year-on-year rise.

This impressive performance took place against the backdrop of fluctuating global trade dynamics and a surge in vessel arrivals in May.

According to Hu Meijuan, deputy general manager of the Marketing and Development Center at Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), diverse trade routes supported the overall volume despite the pressure on routes to and from the United States due to tariffs in April.

"Although the volume of US routes at Shanghai Port was under pressure in April due to the high tariffs imposed by the United States on China, the volumes of other routes almost universally increased, bolstering overall business volume," Hu said.

The resumption of US-China trade talks that involved tariff reductions boosted the volume of US routes in the last two weeks of May.

The rebound in US freight volume has prompted shipping companies to expedite the return of previously re-routed US shipping capacity to Shanghai, resulting in a noticeable increase in the number of container ship berthings at Shanghai Port in May.

Despite this sudden increase, Shanghai Port has managed to achieve a double reduction in

the average berthing waiting time and operation time of container ships in May.

The port's success in handling increased volume efficiently is attributed to its ongoing efforts in lean management and smart port development. Streamlined procedures, data analytics, and AI algorithms have optimized terminal operations and significantly reduced vessel turnaround times.

In addition, strong support from maritime affairs, customs, border inspection and other port departments has ensured smooth operations, improved efficiency, and created a better business environment.
