摘要:On the morning of June 6, the first session of the Boao Forum for Asia International Science, Technology and Innovation Forum 2025

On the morning of June 6, the first session of the Boao Forum for Asia International Science, Technology and Innovation Forum 2025 Hong Kong Conference focused on the role of youth in driving technological innovation.More than a dozen young officials, scholars, and entrepreneurs from Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Spain, and China took part in the Youth Roundtable. The session was moderated by Mr. CHIU Duncan, Member of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong SAR (Functional Constituency – Technology and Innovation). Mr. Zhang Jun, Secretary General of the Boao Forum for Asia, was also present at the roundtable.

The youth participants engaged in a discussion on the theme “Youth Leadership for an Intelligent, Green and Inclusive Future”, drawing on their respective national contexts, sectors, and personal reflections. They agreed that the theme captures the key directions of today’s global development. An intelligent future is not only about artificial intelligence or automation, but also about realizing human potential. A green future is fundamental to sustainable development and represents a core direction for future technological advancement. An inclusive future is essential for common development among all nations. Regardless of race, gender, background, or belief, it is vital to ensure that every voice is heard.

Building an intelligent, green, and inclusive future cannot be achieved without the active involvement of young people. Youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow — they are also the changemakers of today. Governments and societies should work together to empower young people to participate in and lead the process of innovation and development. In particular, for developing countries and vulnerable groups, policies should aim to create more opportunities for youth engagement and enhance their digital capabilities. Governments can support young innovators and startups by providing training, mentorship, and micro-financing, while also addressing the real challenges faced by small-scale entrepreneurs. International youth exchange in the field of innovation should be strengthened to facilitate the sharing of knowledge, best practices, and creative ideas. Special attention should be given to aligning youth efforts with the acceleration of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, enabling young people around the world to engage more closely with experts and government bodies for coordinated action. As for the youth themselves, it is important to stay grounded — innovating based on real-world problems rather than chasing trends. Solutions should be rooted in local needs and practical scenarios. Young people should also actively engage with regulatory frameworks, and foster communication and collaboration across sectors and stakeholders.

Secretary General Zhang Jun expressed his appreciation for the valuable views and suggestions shared by the participants. He noted that the world is undergoing profound transformation and facing a range of major challenges, prompting all sides to seek effective solutions. Whatever those solutions may be, they cannot succeed without the active participation — and even leadership — of young people. It is for this reason that the Boao Forum for Asia places great importance on the role of youth. The Forum is committed to creating platforms and opportunities for youth development and has launched the training program specifically designed for young talents from Asian countries.

Mr. Zhang expressed his hope that the youth participants would draw five key takeaways from the discussion. First, they should actively shoulder the responsibility of building a better future. Second, they need to cultivate a long-term and global vision. Third, they are encouraged to begin by addressing real-world problems around them and to take concrete actions. Fourth, they should contribute to enhancing mutual trust and cooperation among nations. And fifth, they must keep pace with the latest developments in science and technology, and learn to harness new innovations effectively. He called on the young participants to not only be part of this conversation, but also serve as messengers — sharing what they have learned with others, and inspiring more youth to join in the collective effort toward a better future.
