On December 30th, construction officially began on the Pingzuo 110kV Transmission Phase Shifter Project in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, marking the second project of its kind within the province.

Yangzhou, known for its flat and open terrain, is rich in wind and solar resources, driving a strong momentum for developing its renewable energy industry. By the end of December, the city’s total installed renewable energy capacity is expected to reach 11.61 million kilowatts, with wind and solar energy accounting for 50.59% of the total installed capacity. Renewable energy is projected to generate 8.12 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, representing 27.6% of the city’s total power generation.

In July 2023, Yangzhou Power Supply Company successfully completed the Ping’an 110kV Transmission Phase Shifter Project in Baoying County. As China’s first transmission phase shifter project, it filled a domestic gap in the application of compact and economical power flow control technology, establishing itself as a national benchmark demonstration project.

Building on the success of the Ping’an Phase Shifter Project, the Pingzuo Phase Shifter Project introduces innovative upgrades with coordinated control strategies for primary and auxiliary systems. A phase-shifting transformer will be installed along the 110kV interconnection line between the Pinzuo and Zhouxiang substations in Gaoyou City. This innovative setup is designed to address the reverse power flow issue for renewable energy at Zhouxiang Substation and the heavy loading of the main transformer at Pingzuo Substation. In addition, it will alleviate the pressure on the Zhouxiang-Gaoyou 220kV outbound transmission line, increasing the local renewable energy consumption capacity by approximately 120,000 kilowatts - equivalent to 11.7% of the region’s total power demand.

With the commissioning of the Yangzhou-Zhenjiang ±200kV DC transmission project Phase I and the Ping’an Phase Shifter, the Yangzhou region has successfully established a “one vertical, one horizontal” flexible grid framework. The launch of Phase II of the Yangzhou-Zhenjiang ±200kV DC transmission project, along with the construction of the Pinzuo Phase Shifter, marks the accelerated formation of a “two vertical, two horizontal” flexible grid framework in the region.

Looking ahead, Yangzhou Power Supply Company will collaborate with the Jiangsu Electric Power Research Institute of State Grid Corporation to conduct preliminary research on three-port phase shifter projects. By integrating the results of the Pinzuo Phase Shifter Project, the company aims to upgrade grid power flow optimization from point-to-point to regional balance, further improving grid asset utilization efficiency and enhancing renewable energy integration into the grid.
