The Ministry of Commerce recently announced the evaluation results of the comprehensive development level of national economic and technological development zones in 2024, according to the Hunan Provincial Department of Commerce on January 6, 2025. Hunan's Xiangtan Economic and Technological Development Zone was included in the national top 50 list for the first time, achieving its best performance over the past years.
According to the evaluation results, six of the ten national economic and technological development zones in Hunan experienced a significant rise in ranking. Five of the six ones were among the top 100 nationwide and among the top 30 in central regions of China. In particular, Changsha Economic and Technological Development Zone ranked 31st nationwide and 4th in central regions, and Xiangtan Economic and Technological Development Zone ranked 47th nationwide, marking its first entry into the national top 50 list. Liuyang Economic and Technological Development Zone and Changde Economic and Technological Development Zone ranked 68th and 90th nationwide respectively. Wangcheng Economic and Technological Development Zone ranked 92nd nationwide and 26th in central regions, marking its debut on China's top 100 list. Additionally, Changsha's four national economic and technological development zones have all made remarkable advancements in ranking.
After years of development, Hunan's national economic development zones have gotten off the ground and have transitioned from small, weak areas to large, robust ones. The ten national economic development zones contributed 10% of Hunan's gross regional product, 22% of value-added industrial output, and 32% of tax revenue with only 0.14% of land area. Since 2024, national economic development zones accounted for 20% and 30% of the province's total imports and exports as well as its actual use of foreign capital. The primary role of these zones in open economy is becoming increasingly prominent.
