Having nursed Putao (grape) for two days, mummy found in the morning that the bird had failed to get through the illness - she was gone - though last night she seemed much perkier and tried to wander around despite a limp. Mummy put her into a plastic bag, with Yunduoer, who was still in slumber, in the dark - had Yunduo’er known Putao’s death, she wouldn’t have been able to go to school.

葡萄病了，妈妈照顾了两天。昨晚葡萄好像精神多了，试图到处走走，尽管一瘸一拐的。可今早妈妈发现葡萄还是没熬过去：葡萄走了。妈妈把葡萄装进一个塑料袋儿。云朵儿正睡得香，什么都还不知道。要是让云朵儿知道葡萄已经没了，今天这学肯定是上不成了。

Poor Putao! In the pitch darkness of the night, her life was slipping away like a pale flame going out with its last-ditch weak flicker.

可怜的葡萄！她的生命一点点流逝，就如同一个苍白的火苗用尽最后一点点力气微弱地震颤了一下，便熄在昨夜的漆黑中。

After school, Yunduo’er made a beeline for the cage, only to see Putao was nowhere to be accounted for. “Where’s my putao? Where’s my putao?” she blurted out. “Something’s wrong with her, Putao was gone this morning,” mummy said tentatively. Yunduo’er burst out blubbering. Mummy tried to soothe Yunduo’er, saying that Lanmei was lonely under that tree, now Putao would be her pleasant company and they’d be best friends again, With that, Yunduo’er calmed down a bit. “Ningmen is a loner here now,” Yunduo’er said.

放学后，云朵儿直奔鸟笼，发现葡萄不见了。“我的葡萄呢？我的葡萄呢？”云朵儿焦急地问。“出了点儿问题，葡萄今天早上走了，”妈妈说得很小心。云朵儿立刻嚎了起来。妈妈安慰云朵儿，说蓝莓在那棵树下特别孤单，葡萄可以过去陪她，她俩又可以是好朋友了。听妈妈这么说，云朵儿平静了些。“现在这儿只剩柠檬自己了，”云朵儿说。

After dinner, mummy took Yunduo’er out to give Putao a decent burial. Putao was laid to rest, carefully and solemnly wrapped up in a tissue, in a pit Yunduo’er dug close to deceased Lanmei under a tree. In front of Putao’s small permanent resting place Yunduo’er murmured something obviously intended for her late avian friends wearing a mournful expression.

晚饭后，妈妈带云朵儿出去给葡萄举行一个体面的葬礼。云朵儿在树下靠近之前死去的蓝莓的地方挖了一个小坑，小心、庄严地把葡萄用餐巾纸包上，让葡萄安息在那里。在葡萄小小的安息地前，云朵儿表情悲伤地说了点什么，显然是说给自己的已故鸟类朋友的。
