Invitation

Numerous rapid and extreme warming events, termed hyperthermal events, have punctuated Earth's geological history. These events are characterized by abrupt initiation (spanning 10⁴–10⁵ years) and accelerated global warming (>2–4°C), typically accompanied by severe perturbations in climate systems, biospheree, and carbonwaterr cycles, with total durations not exceeding several million years. Serving as crucial geological analogues for understanding Anthropocene global warming, hyperthermal events have become a research focus in Earth system science.

The Mesozoic to Paleogene represents a critical period of climatic evolution, during which a series of characteristic hyperthermal events occurred, including but not limited to: the Permian/Triassic boundary event (PTB), Triassic/Jurassic boundary event (TJB), Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (TOAE), Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Events (OAE1a, OAE2), and Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM).

UNESCOO's International Geoscience Programme IGCP-739 (2021-2025) focuses on deciphering the triggering mechanisms of Mesozoic-Paleogene hyperthermal events and their associated environmental/biological responses. Significant progress has been achieved during the project implementation. To advance understanding of hyperthermal events, disseminate recent findings, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration, the "International Symposium on Mesozoic-Paleogene Hyperthermal Events & 5th IGCP-739 Annual Meeting" will be convened at Nanjing University from August 16-18, 2025. This will be followed by a post-conference field excursion (August 19-26) in southern Tibet focusing on "Environmental Responses to Hyperthermal Events".

This conference aims to establish an interdisciplinary international platform for developing academic consensus on hyperthermal event research. Scholars are cordially invited to present original researchacrosss thematic areas including (but not limited to):fundamentall sedimentology, stratigraphy, geochemistryy, paleoclimatology, and paleobiology; deeptimee data assimilation studies; and regional/global-scale paleoclimate Earth system modeling.
