On December 26th, the "Exploration No. 3," China's first multi-purpose deep-sea scientific exploration and archaeological vessel, was delivered and set sail from Nansha, Guangzhou. The vessel is China's first comprehensive scientific research ship designed for global deep-sea (including polar regions) exploration, with manned deep-diving capabilities in ice areas. It can carry out both deep-sea scientific investigations and underwater archaeological research, and in the summer, it can also support scientific exploration in polar regions. This will expand China's manned deep-diving capabilities from just full ocean depth to all ocean areas, significantly enhancing the China's ability to conduct deep-sea archaeological operations.

The vessel, measuring about 104 meters in length, has a displacement of about 10,000 tons and a top speed of 16 knots. It features dual-directional icebreaking capabilities at both its bow and stern. It was designed, developed, constructed, tested at sea, and delivered in just two years. Over 100 organizations participated in the project, with nearly 10 key equipment development and integration units involved. During its research and construction process, various research institutions, enterprises, and universities collaborated to address critical technologies, overcoming monopolistic challenges in designing ice-capable vessels, precise dynamic positioning under icy conditions, and intelligent ship control technologies.

During the construction, the Guangzhou Shipyard International Co., Ltd. actively explored the domestic production and independent control of key core scientific research equipment. This effort drove the development of domestic technologies, leading to the first application of several supporting system devices made in China.
