Halloween & All Saints’ Day: Celebration and Remembrance in Belgium
Halloween — the beloved holiday of costumes, candy, and spooky fun — has traveled far beyond its American roots. In Belgium, while not as extravagant as in the United States, it has grown steadily in popularity, especially among young people and families.
The origins of Halloween and All Saints’ Day date back over two millennia to the Celtic festival of Samhain and early Christian traditions. The Celts marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter, believing the veil between the living and the dead was thinnest on that night. Bonfires were lit and masks worn to ward off evil spirits — the roots of today’s costume customs.
In AD 609, Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Roman Pantheon to the Virgin Mary and all martyrs, blending pagan and Christian practices. Later, in AD 835, Pope Gregory IV fixed All Saints’ Day on November 1. The night before, “All Hallows’ Eve,” eventually evolved into modern Halloween.
During the Middle Ages, in what is now Belgium, monasteries and churches held masses and vigils for the departed. Over time, the holiday evolved from purely religious observance into a shared tradition of faith, memory, and family unity.
In Belgium, All Saints’ Day (November 1) is a national public holiday. Families visit cemeteries to clean graves, lay chrysanthemums, and light candles for the souls of their loved ones. The chrysanthemum, a flower of remembrance and eternity, fills Belgian markets and homes during this period.
Halloween
All Saints’ Day
All Souls’ Day
The festive atmosphere carries a dual character: October 31 brings lively Halloween parties and costumes, while November 1 is solemn and reflective — a day for family gatherings and remembrance. In some areas, commemorations extend to November 2 (All Souls’ Day).
Halloween in Belgium is more tender and reflective. Pumpkins and candles light the streets, while chrysanthemums bloom across cemeteries — symbols of both life and memory.
“Des bonbons ou un sort!”
“Snoep of je leven!”
Children join the celebration by dressing up as ghosts, vampires, or witches, knocking on doors shouting:
• “Des bonbons ou un sort!” (French)
• “Snoep of je leven!” (Dutch)
Many communities organize safe trick-or-treat routes guided by parents or volunteers.
As night falls, cemeteries glow with hundreds of candles — a peaceful contrast to Western-style horror. Meanwhile, Belgian towns host pumpkin markets, Halloween parties, and haunted castle tours, blending the sacred with the playful.
