Mummy gets to Yunduo’er’s school at 3pm for the solemn ceremony that will induct all kids into the Chinese Young Pioneers (CYP). Yunduo’er stands in a single vertical row of kids, with mummy standing by her, winding a longlingjin round her neck and giving her a gift, just like other parents doing the same thing for their kids. From today on, Yunduo’er is a CYP member or Shaoxiandui.
I still have a dim memory of a similar induction ceremony when I was in my third grade of primary school, but parents were not there. Different from our times when only those recognized for their exemplary behaviors by teachers qualified to become an honorable hongxiaobing Red Little Guard now known as Shaoxiandui, today kids who reach a specified age are automatically inducted into CYP. Back then exemplary behaviors included good good study day day up, actively taking part in physical labor disregarding hardships, exhaustion or dirt, observing class discipline without making small movements, speaking to others in whispers, learning from shushu Leifeng and practicing haorenhaoshi to be a good person and perform good deeds, taking the initiative to hand in the money lost by someone in public places to teachers or a police shushu, helping elders cross the street, and whatnot.
Teachers told us repeatedly that it was revolutionary martyrs’ blood that that had dyed honglingjin red. Before I became a hongxiaobing, I once had a heated debate with a classmate over why honglingjin are red. Citing the teachers, I said they were dyed red by revolutionary martyrs’ blood while my classmate said they were pieces of red fabric. In my imagination, in battles against enemies, when a revolutionary soldier got hit by a bullet and sacrificed his or her life, someone rushed out and let the blood soak white fabric. The debate ended nowhere. I turned to Mother for help, who said my classmate was right.
Later I came to realize that red stands for revolution, and revolutionaries didn’t dread deaths because they’d experienced things much more dreadful than deaths in KMT period.
“We are the successors of communism,” Yunduo’er was singing in the car seeing the revolutionary paintings on street walls of Donglan, Guangxi on the morning of July 28 during our recent travel across the country. We swung by the Red Army town to specifically give Yunduo’er a chance of revolutionary immersion.
