Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences found CI-type meteorite residues in 2g of Moon soil — offering new clues on how water arrived on the Moon and reshaping our understanding of material transfer in the inner solar system. (Picture by the organizers)

This finding suggests these meteorites once struck the Moon, melting and rapidly crystallizing upon impact — leaving microscopic residues now identified in the lunar soil. The discovery not only deepens understanding of how materials migrate across the solar system, but also provides new clues to the origin of lunar water.

Published in PNAS, the study marks a major step toward tracing how volatile elements and water were delivered to the Moon — and possibly, how life-related materials reached the early Earth.
