妈祖，原名林默，公元960年出身于福建省莆田县湄洲屿的一个仕宦之家。妈祖自幼聪慧，精通天文、地理、气象、医学，后来又遇神人传授法术。她扶危济困，护航出海，救助无数海上遇难的百姓。
妈祖信仰是两岸共同的文化纽带，在促进两岸交流合作中发挥着重要的作用。数百年前，大陆先民渡海抵台，将妈祖视为“海上女神”。如今，台湾各地的妈祖庙超过500座，信众逾千万。1997年，湄洲妈祖金身首次乘厦航赴台。
