论文摘要
Policymakers advocate for foreign aid to reduce the “root causes” of migration at origin despite a lack of scientific evidence on the effectiveness of such policies. We examine the global effects of aid on migration by combining georeferenced data on World Bank project announcements and disbursements from 2008-2019 with survey data on migration preferences of one million individuals worldwide and bilateral migration flows. Employing event studies and instrumental variable regressions, we find that in the short term, aid improves expectations of the future and trust in institutions, reducing individual migration preferences and asylum seeker flows. In the longer term, aid increases incomes, leading to more regular migration, consistent with the “mobility transition” theory.

论文摘要
Many developing countries face a challenge whereby low tax compliance limits governments’ ability to provide public goods, while at the same time, inadequate public good provision discourages tax compliance. We examine whether a prominent local public infrastructure program can disrupt this vicious cycle through a randomized trial of first time street pavement projects in Acayucan, Mexico. Among 56 eligible street projects in poor neighborhoods, 28 were randomly selected for pavement. We analyze administrative property tax records to determine if tax compliance increased as a result. To guide our empirical analysis, we develop a theoretical model incorporating two key mechanisms: updating of beliefs about government expenditure efficiency and direct benefits from infrastructure improvements that elicit a reciprocity to comply. We find that property owners adjacent to newly paved streets (capturing private benefit effects) increase tax compliance by 4.7 percentage points (ITT) to 7.7 percentage points (LATE), corresponding to a 5.5–9.0% rise over baseline compliance rates. In addition, property owners exposed to pavement projects in their trajectory to downtown also show increased compliance (consistent with belief updating), with a one standard deviation increase in exposure raising compliance by 2.3-3.8 percentage points. In line with model predictions, we find that treatment effects are more pronounced among individuals with lower initial government satisfaction. Our findings indicate the delivery of public goods can enhance tax compliance by delivering direct benefits as well as improving perceptions of government efficiency. A back of the envelope calculation suggests that belief updating from citizens observing the pavement projects generates twice as much tax revenue as reciprocity effects from direct beneficiaries lining newly paved streets.

论文摘要
This study examines whether and how financial analysts benefit from attending virtual private meetings held by companies. Using Chinese data, we find that analysts who attend virtual private meetings issue more accurate earnings forecasts after the meetings compared to analysts who attend site visits. When private meetings accommodate a larger number of and more diverse participants, analysts benefit more from virtual meetings while benefiting less from site visits. Additional analyses show that analysts attending virtual meetings issue more timely forecast revisions than analysts attending site visits. Furthermore, while analysts attending virtual meetings and site visits both reduce their forecast optimism after the meetings, forecast optimism of analysts attending virtual meetings is more likely to be positively affected by managers’ tone during the meetings. This paper underscores the significance of virtual analyst meetings in the context of analyst research production.

论文摘要
We analyze a market-wide panel dataset on retail options from India, which has an 80% share in option contracts traded worldwide. Retail participation dominates and is concentrated in index options. Traders exhibit short-term speculative behavior with day trading and short-duration directional bets especially as options converge to 0DTE. Three natural experiments indicate that financial constraints and lottery-like preferences drive investor behavior. An exogenous supply shift induces trading and shifts volume to short-term options. Lot-size increases and delivery margins targeting speculation are offset by speculative shifts to cheaper and riskier options. While stock market inclusion and participation increase welfare in canonical household finance models, they can also entrench speculative behavior that is difficult to undo.

论文摘要
My talk will consist of two parts. First, I will present recent research examining the contagion of unethical behavior in organizations. While prior literature has largely assumed a uniform contagion pattern across unethical behaviors, our work distinguishes between self-interested unethical behavior (SUB) and unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB). Drawing from social learning and social exchange theories, we propose that employees are more likely to emulate UPB—given its prosocial framing—than SUB, due to heightened conformity pressure. Furthermore, we theorize that this dynamic is moderated by relational mobility climate, defined as employees’ perceptions of their ability to exit existing workplace relationships and form new ones. Specifically, when perceived relational mobility is low, the influence of coworkers’ UPB on individual UPB—via conformity pressure—is amplified. In contrast, relational mobility climate does not significantly moderate the spread of SUB. Our findings, supported by both field and experimental studies, underscore the role of conformity pressure and relational mobility as key mechanisms and contextual factors in unethical behavior contagion. In the second part of the talk, I will introduce the Dispute Resolution Research Center (DRRC) at Northwestern University. As Executive Director, I will highlight the center’s mission, educational resources, and opportunities for collaboration in negotiation pedagogy and research development.

论文摘要
Consumers derive functional utility from the content of news articles. In addition, consumers derive social utility from social interactions centered around news articles. The widespread consumption of news through mobile devices has encouraged media platforms, such as The New York Times and The Financial Times, to permit their subscribers to gift articles to nonsubscribers. This paper explores how publishers should manage gift articles and the social interactions driven by these articles. One might think that consumers' desire for social interaction would help media platforms to charge higher prices. To the contrary, we find that consumers' desire for social interaction intensifies price competition. Because gift articles enable non-subscribers to gain access to a publisher's content, one may believe that gift articles will reduce consumers' incentive to subscribe, thus hurting publishers' profits. We show that gift articles can have the opposite effect by softening competition between publishers. Interestingly, as consumers' desire for social interaction increases and directly intensifies competition, publishers can mitigate the negative outcome by strategically permitting consumers to gift more content, thereby leading to higher prices and profits. Typically, in a competitive multi-sided market, the prospect of monetizing consumer attention and earning advertising revenue intensifies competition and reduces subscription prices. However, we show that advertising revenue from gift articles does not have this effect, as it comes from competitors' consumers rather than the publisher's own. We further extend the model to examine the strategic implications of a few variations in how consumers interact within their social circles, such as distance-dependent social interaction, segment-dependent social interaction, and directional social interaction.
