论文摘要

We investigate whether the adoption of data-driven technologies reshapes the competitive dynamics within the small business lending market by reducing the information advantages traditionally held by local banks. To identify these information advantages, we utilize local newspaper closures as an information shock to capture the reduction of local information available to non-local banks. Consistent with a decrease in valuable local information reinforcing local banks' information advantages, we show that banks with higher local market concentration obtain a larger share of small business loans in their local counties following local newspaper closures. However, these information advantages gradually diminish over time after cloud platforms, a key data-driven technology infrastructure, are widely implemented. Using various proxies for data-driven technology adoption, we find consistent evidence that local banks' information advantages disappear in counties where they compete against banks making greater investments in these technologies; specifically, those expanding AI-related human capital investments, developing more AI patents, adopting web analytics technologies, or allocating larger budgets for data storage. We further support our results using banks’ proximity to AI research institutions as an instrument for AI-related human capital investments. Overall, these findings suggest that data-driven technologies can reduce local banks' private information advantages, leveling the playing field in lending markets.

论文摘要

An emerging body of literature demonstrates that neighborhoods significantly impact the long-term outcomes of children. A crucial factor in designing successful neighborhood-based policy interventions is understanding the elasticity of housing supply Chyn-Daruich (2023). This paper investigates the effects of housing supply restrictions by integrating neighborhood effects into a GE overlapping-generations model. The model accounts for endogenous housing supply, neighborhood quality, location choice, and child development.

Importantly, housing production requires paying construction taxes that are increasing in the produced amount -- and such convexity is determined by local housing regulations. Less restrictive regulations enhance supply and decrease house prices (e.g., favoring developments such as apartment buildings). Households hold houses as part of their assets, and consequently, rich households may oppose less restrictive regulations as this decreases the value of their wealth -- a short-term loss. However, loosening restrictions can make housing more affordable, facilitating greater access for children to reside in neighborhoods conducive to their future potential -- a long-term benefit. Furthermore, the impact of housing regulation on neighborhood demographics may also influence neighborhood quality effects, thereby affecting child development outcomes of all children.

Estimated using US data, the model is used to evaluate policies that reduce housing supply restrictions in line with the observed cross-sectional variation across US cities. Preliminary results suggest that restrictive housing regulation does hinder long-run child-development and welfare. Magnitudes depend crucially on who profits directly from the housing permits production. In future steps, transition dynamics and political economy results will be obtained.

论文摘要

This paper investigates how climate change shapes patent examiners’ beliefs and patent review outcomes. Using a large sample of U.S. patent examiners from 2012 to 2020, we exploit geographical variations of examiner locations and rely on climatic natural disasters as shocks to beliefs about climate change. We find that examiners who experience climatic natural disasters grant more green patents in the future. Furthermore, green patents granted by examiners with experience of climatic disasters are of higher quality. The effects of climatic disaster experience are muted on non-green patent reviews. Moreover, disaster-affected examiners are more likely to donate more to the Democratic Party and exert greater effort in reviewing green patent applications. Finally, these green patents granted by disaster-affected examiners significantly reduce firms’ greenhouse gas emissions.

论文摘要

Research examining how newcomers influence incumbents' performance has yielded mixed results. Much of this analysis treats incumbents as a homogenous group, without accounting for varied individual responses to the arrival of high-performing newcomers. In this study, I set out to complement extant literature with a social network approach by providing theory and evidence for a novel relational mechanism that links newcomers and incumbents' performance. Specifically, I hypothesize that low-performing incumbents are more likely to restrict their communication to a more concentrated group of colleagues when a high-performing newcomer joins, because such cohesive social networks increase homogeneity in information, behavior, and norms, thus reducing ambiguity. In contrast, high-performing incumbents, motivated by a desire for diversity and influence, expand their communicative reach when a high-performing newcomer joins. I argue that these changes in incumbents’ network configurations operate as a pathway that leads to divergent performance, rooted in social capital mechanisms. I find support for these hypotheses through a unique dataset from a financial institution and a pre-registered experiment designed to identify the underlying psychological mechanisms. This research underscores an underexplored aspect: how shifts in incumbents' communication networks in response to a high-performing newcomer can amplify performance disparities within the group.

论文摘要

Individuals worldwide, especially members of minority groups, tend to be less inclined to seek healthcare for mental illnesses compared with physical illnesses. This study assessed whether the previously overlooked factor of in-group preference plays a role in consumers’ decision-making regarding healthcare-seeking behavior for physical and mental illnesses. With a large-scale dataset comprising approximately 25 million medical consultations and 10 randomized controlled experiments, we consistently found evidence that when seeking healthcare for mental (vs. physical) illnesses, consumers place greater importance on healthcare providers’ empathy, leading to a stronger preference for in-group healthcare providers (e.g., those providers from consumers’ own groups). The effect of illness type on consumer in-group preference was attenuated by the following: when consumers were presented with prior reviews highlighting out-group healthcare providers’ empathy; when consumers received information that out-group healthcare providers had completed cultural competence training; and among consumers with a relatively high level of global identity. The current research contributes to the literature on mental health, empathy, global identity, cultural influences on consumer behavior, and accessible healthcare. More importantly, it provides practical implications for marketers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers to promote mental healthcare and mitigate health disparities.
