Starting 1 July 2025, cargo ships are banned from discharging sewage water, sulphuric wash water and scrubber sludge into Finnish territorial waters, making Finland the first country to implement such comprehensive wastewater regulations for cargo ships.

7月1日，芬兰禁止船舶在其领海内排放生活污水、含硫洗涤水、脱硫塔废水的开创性禁令正式生效，这使其成为全球第一个对货船实施全面禁止排放此类废水法规的国家。

New data released by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) shows that as of now in 2025, over 2,280 seafarers on 222 ships have been abandoned, with unpaid wages amounting to 13.1 million U.S. dollars. The number of cases has increased by 30% year-on-year, making it the worst year on record for seafarer abandonment.

The 134th session of the Council was held in person at the IMO Headquarters from July 7 to 11, the World Maritime Day theme for 2026 and 2027 was endorsed and the theme is “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence”. The annual celebration will be held on the last Thursday of September each year. This theme highlights the IMO’s clear commitment to assisting member states in translating policies into tangible results by providing technical assistance, training, and other essential services.
