The payphone on Maple Street had been out of order for years. Rust covered its surface, and the cracked glass of the keypad was smeared with dirt. Nobody used payphones anymore, let alone one that had been disconnected a decade ago.
And yet, at exactly11:47 PMevery night, it rang.
Nobody ever answered it. People in town avoided walking past it after dark, and those who lived nearby claimed they sometimes heard voices coming from the receiver, even when it wasn’t ringing.
Nathan had heard the stories his whole life. But he didn’t believe in ghosts, or curses, or anything supernatural. So when he and his friends walked past the phone one summer night and heard the familiar metallic ringing, he stopped.
“Don’t,” his friend Sarah warned, tugging at his sleeve.
Nathan smirked. “It’s just a broken phone. What’s the worst that could happen?”
Before anyone could stop him, he picked up the receiver.
Silence.
Then—
A faintbreathingon the other end.
Nathan’s smirk faded. “Hello?”
More breathing. Then, awhisperso quiet he barely caught it.
“Why did you leave me?”
Nathan’s blood ran cold. The voice wasfamiliar. Impossible, but familiar.
“Who is this?” he asked, gripping the receiver tightly.
Static crackled, followed by a voice that sent ice through his veins.
“Nathan. Help me.”
His heart stopped. He knew that voice.
It was his brother.
His brother, who had died five years ago.
Nathan dropped the phone and stumbled back, his breath coming in gasps. Sarah and the others stared at him.
“What happened?” she asked, eyes wide.
Nathan turned to the phone. The receiver dangled from its cord, swinging gently. The payphone was silent once more.
But as they walked away, Nathan swore he heard a whisper behind him, carried on the wind.
“You were supposed to come back for me.”
The next night, at11:47 PM, the phone rang again.
This time, Nathan wasn’t there to answer it.
But someone else might be.
