June 8, 2025 marks the 17th World Oceans Day and the 18th National Marine Publicity Day. On the morning of June 7, as World Oceans Day approached, 10 international students from Taizhou University and 20 primary school students jointly visited the "Blue Cycle" Marine Ecological Civilization Education Base, embarking on a blue guardianship journey that transcended national boundaries.
The "Blue Cycle" Marine Ecological Civilization Education Base serves as a centralized exhibition point for the digital governance of marine pollutants and a regulatory dispatching center for Marine waste. Jiaojiang District has innovatively implemented the "Blue Cycle" model for marine pollutant governance, truly achieving source control, low-carbon recycling, and high-value utilization of marine plastic waste. In October 2023, "Blue Cycle" won the "Champions of the Earth" award, the highest honor in the field of environmental protection awarded by the United Nations.
Uncover the mystery of marine pollution
The event kicked off after two "ice-breaking" games. International students from countries such as Uzbekistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Liberia, and Zimbabwe formed 1-on-2 pairs with primary school students to jointly launch the Blue Cycle journey.
"Every year, 800,000 tons of garbage enter the ocean globally, and the governance of marine waste has become a major issue urgently needing resolution in current marine protection..." At the "Blue Cycle" Marine Ecological Civilization Education Base, docents provided an immersive explanation of the full-chain model for managing and transforming marine plastic waste, comprehensively detailing the progress of marine blue carbon pilot projects—from how garbage is collected to how it is processed. Stepping into the "Little Blue Home" recycling hub, participants uncovered the mysteries of marine pollution, learning together how plastic waste, oil spills, chemical substances, and other pollutants gradually erode the blue ocean, as well as the processes of unified recycling, sorting, and packaging of marine plastic waste.
Marine environmental protection knows no national boundaries, and global environmental protection is a shared responsibility. At this moment, friends of different skin colors—both young and old—held hands, discussing in whispers as they toured, learning how plastic waste is recovered from coastal beaches, sea surfaces, and seabeds, and how it undergoes processes such as collection, sorting, packaging, transportation, recycled granulation, and manufacturing to ultimately become traceable recycled products like daily necessities and clothing. The process of turning waste into treasure was deeply shocking.
Finally, everyone jointly made eco-friendly shell lamps, experienced marine aesthetics, and signed the "Blue Covenant" to jointly build a plastic-free marine future.
At the end of the event, Daniel from Nigeria exclaimed with excitement: "This place is very interesting. I am deeply impressed by these items made from garbage, especially the scarves made from waste—their patterns are beautiful, and I love them."
Kalin said: "Experiencing this with the children feels great. It allows us to intuitively understand the impact of garbage on the ocean. The concept of marine recycling can also boost economic development and create more job opportunities, which is particularly meaningful."
In this era full of vitality and challenges, environmental protection is no longer an empty slogan but a weighty responsibility on everyone's shoulders. It is the right and obligation of every individual to contribute to protecting the ocean.
