During this year's Dragon boat Festival, a series of short videos showcasing thrilling dragon boat races lit up outdoor screens in countries such as Singapore, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United States, and South Africa. These innovative overseas broadcasts invited global audiences to experience the vibrancy of traditional Chinese culture from Guangdong. Altogether, the campaign attracted more than 4.52 million on-site viewers worldwide.
At Singapore's Chinatown Point, passersby were drawn to the screen by the gripping scenes of dragon boat races. In Dubai Mall, a massive screen above the aquarium played footage of Foshan's Diejiao dragon boat teams executing high-speed drifting maneuvers. On a narrow three-meter-wide river, the boats tilted at nearly 45 degrees to make sharp turns, gliding through the winding waterways like dragons in flight. Foreign tourists eagerly raised their cameras, with one visitor exclaiming, "It's like an extreme water sport! Their teamwork is flawless. Every drift is a perfect demonstration of speed and skill!"
Dragon boat races served as a cultural link for holiday events across the province, not only preserving traditional Lingnan Water Town customs such as "awakening the dragon boat," "gathering the greens," and "sending dragon boat invitations," but also incorporating new elements like drone shows, live-streaming, and commercial district collaborations. Over the three-day holiday (from May 31st to June 2nd), the province received a total of 23.21 million visitors, up 20.6% year-on-year, and generated tourism revenue of 11.44 billion yuan, up 25.6%.
According to the data from Foshan's Foreign Affairs Bureau in 2025, the number of foreign nationals participating in traditional folk events surged by 210% year-on-year. Among them was Michael from Germany, who became the first foreign paddler to join the Diejiao Chenfeng Dragon Boat Team. Michael trained four times a week, and three hours each session. Thanks to his teammates' support, he quickly mastered sitting and kneeling paddling techniques, learned Cantonese commands, and surpassed 70% of local newcomers in dedication and performance, seamlessly integrating into the team.
At its core, dragon boat racing embodies the collective spirit of the Chinese nation. The drummer sets the rhythm, the helmsman steers the course, and the paddlers row in perfect coordination. Any lapse can derail the entire team. This model of precise collaboration vividly reflects how Chinese society operates and progresses.
As one foreign netizen commented on social media, "The unity and wisdom in dragon boat culture may hold new insights for modern society." In a world facing rising global challenges and geopolitical headwinds, the dragon boat spirit, embodied in the idea that "when everyone paddles together, they can drive a big boat forward," offers a uniquely Chinese approach to solving global problems.
