摘要:If you only know general Words, even if they are advanced, you won't be able to get a high score.

To truly ace the TOEFL test, it's important to expand your vocabulary.

要真正在托福考试中取得优异成绩,扩展词汇量是至关重要的。

If you only know general Words, even if they are advanced, you won't be able to get a high score.

如果你只知道一些泛泛的高级词汇,你是无法获得高分的。

What you need are topic-specific words, words that you will be using in your science and art classes in school or college.

你需要的是特定主题的词汇,这些词汇将在你的学校或大学里的科学和艺术课程中使用。

One topic that often appears in TOEFL reading passages and lectures is agriculture.

托福阅读文章和讲座中常出现的一个主题是农业。

So, for today's video, I've gathered 21 key words you should know when it comes to this field.

所以,在今天的视频中,我整理了21个与这个领域相关的关键词汇,你应该了解。

I regularly share them with TOEFL students during my Zoom sessions, and they greatly help improve their scores.

我经常在Zoom课程中与托福学生分享这些词汇,它们极大地帮助了学生提高成绩。

So, let's look at the top agriculture-related words you should know grouped by theme.

那么,让我们来看看按主题分类的、你应该掌握的顶级农业相关词汇。

The first three words in our list are agriculture, Agricultural Practices and Agricultural Techniques Agriculture is a vast field that involves cultivating plants, raising animals, and managing land to produce food and other resources.

我们列表中的前三个词是农业、农业实践和农业技术。农业是一个广阔的领域,涉及种植植物、饲养动物和管理土地,以生产食物和其他资源。

Agricultural Practices are the methods and activities used in farming, like planting, harvesting, and caring for crops and animals.

农业实践指的是在耕作中使用的方法和活动,如种植、收获以及对农作物和牲畜的照料。

Agricultural Techniques refer to the specific methods or tools used to improve farming, such as irrigation, crop rotation, or advanced machinery.

农业技术指的是用于提升农业生产效率的具体方法或工具,例如灌溉、轮作或先进机械设备。

Agricultural practices and techniques.

农业实践与技术。

Word number four.

第四个词。

And the first agricultural practice is sowing.

第一个农业实践是播种。

This means planting seeds in the soil so they can grow into plants.

这意味着将种子播撒在土壤中,使其能够生长成植物。

For example, a farmer sows wheat seeds in a field in the spring to harvest wheat in the summer.

例如,农民在春天将小麦种子播种到田地里,以便在夏天收获小麦。

Word number five is weeding.

第五个词是除草。

We all know that weeds are wild plants that grow where they're not wanted and compete with cultivated plants.

我们都知道,杂草是那些在不受欢迎的地方生长并与栽培植物竞争的野生植物。

We need to remove them.

我们需要把它们移除。

So, weeding is when we remove unwanted plants that grow among crops and take nutrients from the soil.

所以,除草就是指我们清除生长在农作物之间、从土壤中吸取养分的杂草。

Farmers often pull weeds out by hand or with tools to ensure their crops grow well.

农民通常会用手或工具拔除杂草,以确保作物茁壮成长。

Word number six is plowing.

第六个词是犁地。

Plowing means turning over the soil to make it loose and ready for planting seeds.

犁地指的是翻动土壤,使其变得松软,为播种做好准备。

Farmers use plows attached to tractors or animals, like oxen, to prepare their fields.

农民使用连接拖拉机或动物(如牛)的犁来准备田地。

Another interesting word is to cultivate.

另一个有趣的词是“耕作”。

It means to prepare and use land for crops or gardening.

这意味着准备并利用土地进行农作物种植或园艺活动。

There is also a noun, cultivation.

还有一个名词,叫做“耕作”。

Cultivation is the process of preparing and working on the land to grow crops.

耕作是指为种植作物而准备和处理土地的过程。

Cultivation includes activities like plowing, sowing, and irrigating the soil so that it can grow healthy plants.

耕作包括犁地、播种和灌溉土壤等活动,以促进健康植物的生长。

I've just mentioned the word irrigating.

我刚刚提到了“灌溉”这个词。

What does that mean?

这是什么意思?

This is our eighth word.

这是我们的第八个词。

To irrigate means to supply land with water so the crops and plants will grow or grow better.

灌溉指的是向土地供水,以促进作物和植物的生长或更好地生长。

Irrigation is the process of watering.

灌溉是浇水的过程。

There are many irrigation techniques.

有许多灌溉技术。

that are used in agriculture.

这些词汇在农业中使用。

Irrigation techniques are methods used to supply water to crops where there isn't enough rain.

灌溉技术是指在雨水不足的情况下,为作物提供水分的方法。

Sprinklers, canals, and drip systems are examples of irrigation that farmers use to keep their plants healthy.

喷灌器、灌溉渠和滴灌系统是农民用来保持作物健康的灌溉方式的例子。

Number nine is strip farming.

第九个是带状耕作。

It's a method where crops are planted in alternating strips to protect the soil from erosion.

这是一种作物以交替条带方式种植的方法,旨在保护土壤免受侵蚀。

For example, a farmer might grow corn in one strip and grass in another.

例如,农民可能会在一排种植玉米,而在另一排种植草。

That's called strip farming.

这叫做带状耕作。

This technique has many benefits, such as reduced diseases, less need for pesticides, and increased biodiversity.

这种技术有许多好处,比如减少疾病、降低农药需求以及增加生物多样性。

Another important point is understanding the types of questions for each section and knowing how to approach them effectively.

另一个重要方面是理解每个部分题目的类型,并掌握如何有效应对这些题目。

Often, students can understand most of the text in the reading section, but still end up with a score of 22 to 23.

通常, 学生在阅读部分能理解大部分内容,但最终得分仍停留在22到23分之间。

Some may know almost every word in the listening section, but get fluctuating scores ranging from 21 to 28.

有些人可能在听力部分几乎每个单词都认识,但得分却波动不定, 从21分到28分不等。

To score consistently high, you need to know exactly what to do in each question type and how to get to the right answers as quickly as possible.

要持续取得高分,你需要明确每种题型的应对策略,并尽可能迅速地找到正确答案。

In our TOEFL Prep course, we'll go over reading passages together, review strategies for the listening section, share high-scoring templates for writing and speaking, and more.

在我们的托福备考课程中, 我们将一起研读阅读文章,复习听力部分的策略,分享高分写作和口语模板,以及更多内容。

Another type of farming, and our 10th word, is crop rotation.

另一种农业方式,也是我们的第10个词汇,是轮作。

It's the practice of planting different crops sequentially on the same plot of land to improve soil health, optimize nutrients in the soil, and combat pest and weed presence.

这是在同一块土地上按序种植不同作物的实践, 旨在改善土壤健康,优化土壤养分, 并对抗害虫和杂草的存在。

Rotating crops each year, for example, helps keep the soil healthy.

例如,每年轮作作物有助于保持土壤健康。

I suggest you pause here for a second and look at the words you've just written down.

我建议你在这里稍作停顿,看看你刚刚写下的词汇。

Think about how they can be used in texts about agriculture.

思考一下这些词汇如何在关于农业的文本中使用。

Try making some sample sentences with them.

尝试用它们造一些例句。

Let's do a small challenge now.

现在我们来做一个小挑战吧。

Take the 10 words we've just covered and create a super long sentence that uses all 10 of them but still makes sense.

将我们刚才讨论的10个词汇整合起来,构建一个包含所有这些词汇且语义通顺的超长句子。

share it in the comments below, and we'll see who created the most interesting sentence.

My advice is to study new words from one topic, let's say agriculture, and then find a text or a lecture on the same topic to see if they help you understand more and answer correctly.

我的建议是, 专注于一个主题来学习新词汇,比如农业,然后找一篇相关主题的文本或讲座, 看看这些词汇是否帮助你更好地理解内容并正确回答问题。

Now that we've given your brain some time to rest, let's move on.

既然我们已经让大脑休息了一会儿,现在继续吧。

Word number 11 is sustainable agriculture.

第11个词是可持续农业。

Sustainable agriculture is all about farming practices designed to protect the environment and produce food for the long term.

可持续农业旨在通过保护环境的耕作方式,实现长期的食物生产。

For example, the two techniques I've just mentioned, like crop rotation and strip farming, are examples of sustainable agriculture.

例如, 我刚才提到的两种技术,如轮作和条带耕作,就是可持续农业的例子。

Word number 12 is terrace farming or terracing.

第12个词汇是梯田耕作或梯田。

This is an agricultural practice where farmlands are rearranged or hills are turned into farmland by constructing specific ridged platforms.

这是一种农业实践,通过建造特定的垄状平台,重新规划农田或把山地改造成农田。

on TOEFL.

托福。

You might also see the idea of terraced lands.

你还可能看到梯田的概念。

These are steps carved into hillsides to create flat areas for farming.

这些是在山坡上开凿的梯田,用于创造平坦的耕作区域。

You've probably seen pictures of terraced lands before, like rice terraces in the Philippines.

你可能之前见过梯田的照片,比如菲律宾的稻田梯田。

Because they're flat, they allow farmers to grow crops on steep land without the soil washing away.

由于它们是平坦的,农民可以在陡峭的土地上种植作物而不会导致土壤流失。

Word number 13 is windbreaks.

第13个单词是“风障”。

Windbreaks, just as the name suggests, are rows of trees or bushes planted around fields to block strong winds that could damage crops.

防风林, 顾名思义,是在田地周围种植的树木或灌木行, 用以阻挡可能损害作物的强风。

These also help keep the soil from blowing away.

这些措施还能防止土壤被风吹走。

All these techniques help us to maintain or preserve land.

所有这些技术都有助于我们维护或保护土地。

This is our next word.

这是我们的下一个单词。

To preserve something means to maintain it in its original or existing state.

保护某物意味着将其维持在原始或现有状态。

When we preserve land, we take steps to protect it so it can stay fertile and productive.

当我们保护土地时,我们会采取措施来保护它,使其保持肥沃和生产力。

For example, farmers might use cover crops to prevent soil from eroding during the off-season.

例如,农民可能会在休耕期使用覆盖作物来防止土壤侵蚀。

Our next block is about natural land types.

我们的下一个单元是关于自然土地类型。

Before we dive in, I want to let you know that there will be a second part to this video as well.

Let's keep going.

我们继续吧。

On TOEFL, you'll often see words related to land types.

在托福考试中,你经常会遇到与土地类型相关的词汇。

So let's look at the most common examples.

让我们来看一些最常见的例子。

We have prairies.

我们有草原。

Large, flat, or gently rolling grasslands with few trees often found in North America.

广阔平坦或缓坡起伏、树木稀少的草地,常见于北美洲。

These areas are great for growing wheat and raising cattle.

这些地区非常适合种植小麦和饲养牛群。

Rainforests.

热带雨林。

Dense forests in tropical regions with heavy rainfall throughout the year.

全年降雨充沛的热带地区茂密森林。

Amazon rainforest, for example, is home to many unique plants and animals.

例如,亚马逊雨林是许多独特动植物的家园。

Open grasslands with scattered trees, usually found in tropical regions like Africa.

开阔的草原上零星分布着树木,通常见于非洲等热带地区。

They are often used for grazing livestock, like cows and goats.

它们常被用来放牧牲畜,如牛和羊。

Areas where the land is covered with water, like marshes and swamps.

被水覆盖的地区,如沼泽和湿地。

Wetlands are important for wildlife and are sometimes used to grow crops like rice.

湿地对野生生物至关重要,有时也用于种植水稻等作物。

Grasslands.

草原。

regions dominated by grasses rather than trees.

以草本植物为主而非树木的地区。

Examples include the Veldt in South Africa, which is used for grazing animals.

例子包括南非的草原(Veldt),这里被用来放牧动物。

Hilly regions are areas with many small hills that can make farming difficult.

丘陵地区是指有许多小山丘的区域,这些地形可能会使农业耕作变得困难。

Farmers in these areas often use terraced lands to grow crops.

这些地区的农民常利用梯田种植作物。

Finally, the last term in today's lesson is terraced lands.

最后,今天课程中的最后一个术语是梯田。

As you probably know, terraced lands are flat, steep-like surfaces that are carved into hillsides and mountainsides.

如你所知,梯田是指在山坡和山腰上开凿出的平坦、陡峭状的地表。

This method is often used in areas with steep terrain to create flat areas for farming.

这种方法常用于地形陡峭的地区,以创造适合农业的平坦区域。

The process helps to prevent soil erosion, manage water flow, and make it possible to grow crops in otherwise challenging environments.

这一过程有助于防止土壤侵蚀,管理水流, 并使在原本具有挑战性的环境中种植作物成为可能。

You can find terrace lands in places like the Andes in South America, where farmers use the terraces to grow crops like potatoes, maize, and quinoa.

你可以在南美洲的安第斯山脉等地找到梯田,那里的农民利用梯田种植土豆、玉米和藜麦等作物。

It's a clever and sustainable way of farming in areas where flat land is scarce.

这是一种在平地稀缺地区进行农业的聪明且可持续的方法。

That's the end of our lesson.

课程到此结束。

Thanks for watching.
