Fame--Good or Evil ?

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. It’s my great pleasure to stand here and give you a short speech. Today my topic is “fame”. What do you think of fame? Is it good or evil for you? From my perspective, it is difficult to judge fame from just one aspect.

The expectation of fame originates from the basic human need to be valued by peers, which refers to the motivation of people to expect to be seen and appreciated by as many people as possible.

Fame certainly brings some benefits to a person. It seems clear that fame can assure one of a high social status, regard as well as admiration. It may bring one wealth as a celebrity has more chance to earn great money. Besides, the applause and flowers from the fans may boost one’s self-confidence and increase one’s sense of fulfillment.

However, harm can also be brought to a person by fame. It deprives one of his privacy and liberty. As a public figure, everything he says and does are under the spotlight and his private life never escapes the media’s attention or public curiosity. Fame also places one under great pressure. He has to struggle for living up to the expectations, which may ignore the satisfaction of basic human needs, such as relationships, autonomy, and competence. And it may even seriously harm his mental health.

So fame is definitely a double-edged sword. It’s better to take a critical attitude towards fame, especially in this age when everyone will have their 15 minutes of fame. It has become easy to acquire fame, but difficult to keep it. In fact, we don't need other people’s admiration to accept ourselves the way we are. Money, fame, fortune, and everything that goes with our persistence, endeavor and a little bit of luck. So the best we can do is stay cool whether the fame come or not.
