Recently, 27-year-old Wu Xiaowei shared an update on social media about his creative journey. Over the past five years, he and his team have added vibrant touches to 365 villages through wall painting to promote rural ethos civilization construction.

"Wall painting is neither too easy nor too hard. You need a solid foundation in art, but painting on a wall is nothing like painting on paper." Wu explained, "Unlike the smooth surfaces of canvas or sketchpads, walls are often uneven and require a fresh coat of paint before starting." Wu's brushes are mostly paint rollers and large brushes instead of fine art pens. Beyond the tools, wall painting must blend with the surrounding environment and local culture. "We spend a lot of time discussing what to paint and in what style during the design phase to make sure that the painted walls reflect the local identity," Wu said. He often walks through the villages, chatting with respected community figures and the elderly, sometimes even sitting down with villagers to drink tea and learn their stories.

Before this year's May Day holiday, Wu and his team completed a mural project in Anliu Town, Wuhua County. Blending elements like local farming scenes and tea-picking women, they painted several idyllic scenes on the walls along both sides of the main road and the square in Anliu town, transforming what were once cold, grey walls into vibrant rural landscapes.

In recent years, Wu's footprints have spread across Guangdong. He enjoys incorporating the expressive spirit of traditional Chinese painting into his works, using the walls as a canvas to showcase fine traditional Chinese culture and Chaoshan folk traditions. By doing so, he hopes not only to introduce more people to the beauty of his hometown but also to spread traditional culture and knowledge to local children.
