On the afternoon of May 16, the first session of the 2025 International Expert Lecture Series of Beijing Global Network of Science Festivals (BGNSF) was successfully held. The event was hosted by the Beijing Association for Science and Technology, and co-organized by the Beijing Science Center, Beijing Youth Science and Technology Center, Beijing International Science and Technology Exchange Center, Beijing Youth Science Foundation, and Beijing Association of Science Education Museums.

The featured speaker for this session was Dr. Ilona Iłowiecka-Tańska, Director of Innovation at the Copernicus Science Centre (Poland), a lecturer at the University of Warsaw, and research fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. With decades of in-depth experience in developing and promoting cutting-edge science education solutions, Dr. Iłowiecka-Tańska delivered an insightful lecture titled “From Problem to Exhibit Prototype: Applying Design-Based Research to the Development of Educational Tools.”

Dr. Iłowiecka-Tańska began by introducing the background of the Copernicus Science Centre. She then elaborated on the significance of conducting research based in museums or science centers, highlighting their role in addressing various challenges faced by the education system—such as the continual updating and application of knowledge—and emphasized the necessity of exhibits as tools for educational research. Finally, she shared recent case studies that demonstrated the use of design-based research methodologies.

Following the lecture, Dr. Iłowiecka-Tańska engaged in an in-depth discussion with attendees from the Beijing Science Center and the Science Centre Singapore. Topics included how to enhance public understanding of exhibits, improve exhibit design and research capabilities, and optimize game-based exhibit prototypes.

The lecture attracted participants from international peers in Singapore and Malaysia, as well as audiences from science museums, youth activity centers, and enterprises in Beijing, Henan, Guangxi, and Guangdong. The event greatly enhanced the international perspectives and professional skills of personnel engaged in science communication and science education within BGNSF member institutions and beyond.

The BGNSF International Expert Lecture Series is a professional, international talent development initiative designed to support the capacity building of BGNSF member institutions and professionals in the fields of science communication and science education. More sessions are scheduled for this year—stay tuned.
