重庆-陕西汉中:

Instead of, as originally planned, intentionally roving around to take on Chongqing’s legendary mind-blowing network of layered flyovers that allegedly could even leave navigation devices scratching their heads, we zoom up G85 Yinchuan-Kunming Highway first out of the mega-city of Chongqing and then the province of Sichuan into the province of Shaanxi. During this northerly spin the 14km tunnel at Micangshan, the longest we’ve come across since leaving home which it takes quite a while to run the full length of, is another tribute to Chinese builders who are aces at burrowing through mighty mountains.

重庆那层层立交之烧脑是出了名的，有说都能把导航搞疯。本想着故意满城跑就位体验那种复杂，但放弃了。上G85银昆高速向北，驶离重庆和四川进入陕西。途遇米仓山隧道，14公里穿了好久才穿完。中国工人最善打通巨山，此次出门以来这最长隧道就是中国工人的杰作见证。

We’ve been to loads of nondescript small towns. Every time we ride into a small town, a question always pops into my head: are you sure this is a developing country? And now the same thing happens when the gorgeous cityscape of the small city of Hanzhong, Shaanxi jumps out at us. “They said oh they are developing, we’re a developing nation too. Take a look at Detroit. Take a look at our cities. We’re a developing nation. We have to develop faster than they do. We’re way behind them. You take a look at what’s happening to our cities...” commented President Trump in a TV interview complaining of other countries, including allies, taking advantage of his country and thus putting it in an underdog position.

去过国内无数小城小镇。每次驶入某个无名小地儿，一个问题就往脑子里蹦：“这真是发展中国家？”今陕西汉中美丽市貌远远快速扑面而来，那问题又来了：“这真是发展中国家？”川普总统一次电视访谈中谈起包括盟国在内的别国都在耍心眼儿让美国吃了亏，说，“他们都说哦他们还在发展。那我们（美国）也是发展中国家。看看底特律，看看我们的城市。我们必须发展得比他们快，我们现在远远落后于他们。你看看我们的城市现状......”

It’s the last thing we’d do to let slip through our fingers the chance - one craved every minute during the peregrination - to gorge ourselves on Shaanxi’s authentic roujiamo and mipi’er. We bought some at a local food arcade in the open upon arrival before going to to the hotel. The hotel window affords commanding views of Hanjiang just a few steps away. The placidly wonderful river is well in with us, spicing up our dusky leisurely stroll on its bank. The bridge spanning it alongside the four mock-ancient high towers at its heads is called Tianhan Dadao, celestial Han avenue, which befits the city’s status as the historic place where Liubang, the founding father of the Han empire (221 BC - 220 AD), started his career to unify the nation again, further cementing the concept of unification, first crystallized by the first emperor Qin Shihuangdi, in the nation’s mindset.

此次长途旅行中天天想日日盼，今天可算来了享受陕西正宗肉夹馍和米皮儿的机会，决不可放过。刚到汉中，也不去酒店，就在一个露天食街买了肉夹馍和米皮儿。酒店房间俯瞰紧挨的汉江。傍晚江岸散步，近触汉江之静美。跨江大桥连同两侧桥头处4个仿古高塔叫为天汉大道。这名称符合天道：秦始皇统一华夏确立大一统观念后，历史上汉中正是汉高祖刘邦再次实现一统建立大汉帝国的起点，让大一统观念固于民族血脉中。

Night has fallen. We are back to that food arcade we’ve been to in daytime, one both humming with life and buzzing with the wonderful richness in the mouth of more of Shaanxi’s traditional foods.

天黑了。又回到白天那个露天食街。这里鼎沸的不仅是人声，还有陕西小吃传递的那口舌生香的浓郁。
