As the 15th National Games draw closer, construction and renovation of the competition venues are accelerating. On April 3rd, reporters accompanied He Jingtang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, on a field visit to the completed main venue, the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center, to learn about the highlights of its renovation.

The project was designed by Academician He Jingtang and his team, including renovations of the Center stadium and the Swimming and Diving Hall, the construction of a new Sport Command Center, and upgrades to the overall landscape. In terms of environmental protection, the team adapted the renovation to the Lingnan region's climate and the functional requirements of sports venues. They focused on three key elements of heat insulation, ventilation, and sun shading to create a more climate-adaptive public space for Lingnan. About 2,300 square meters of photovoltaic panels were installed on the floating eaves at different levels of the structure, providing a total capacity of around 368 kW and reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 191 tons annually.

Upon entering the stadium, the most striking feature is the ribbon-like open roof structure. "We added a PTFE tensile membrane beneath the original roof to conceal the exposed steel structure and create an ethereal visual effect," explained He Jingtang. This effect was realized through precise structural calculations, wind tunnel tests, and the use of lightweight new materials. Also, floodlight projection was employed to create dynamic visual effects.

The stadium's exterior integrates traditional Lingnan architectural features, such as extended horizontal eaves and banded french windows. According to He, the design emphasizes the characters of Lingnan. The interior ceiling aligns with the height of the outer curtain wall and uses custom U-shaped aluminum trims to create a sleek elliptical form.

Greening was another key component of the renovation. An additional 39,000 square meters of greenery was added, bringing the total green space to 180,000 square meters. "We aimed not only to serve the Games but also to create a daily activity space for the public," said He. New shaded fitness zones, a circular running track, and multifunctional areas have been included in the venues to enhance the public experience.
