When a 21-year-old young man decides to spend 50,000 yuan traveling across China within half a year, what challenges will he face? Can he make it?
On August 29th, He Li (alias) told reporters that he had already completedthree-quarters of his journey. Starting from Shanghai, he first traveled to the Xizang Autonomous Region, then to Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, Shandong, Henan, Hubei, and other provinces. Since April 13th, he has visited over 50 cities.
In Liaoning, he took a ferry from Dalian to Yantai. During the "seven hours disconnected from the world," the sky shifted from deep blue to golden, until the sunset painted the heavens, and seabirds flew into the distance. With a single ferry ticket, the boy from the mountainous region of Bazhong city in Sichuan Province fulfilled his dream of seeing the vast blue sea.
In Beijing, he spent 650 yuan during six days, including staying in a youth hostel with 60 yuan per night. In the mornings, he bought a few steamed buns and Chinese savory pancakesas food for the day. During the day, he walked 20,000 to 30,000 steps through various scenery spots, and late at night, he ordered group meal deals on food delivery platforms.
So far, He Li has spent just over 20,000 yuan, with his train tickets stacked two centimeters thick. He said his family did not believe he could really tour all of China. "For parents, if their child is away from home for too long, they are bound to feel unhappy. They said I was wandering around every day and would be better off finding a stable job. But since I spent only the money I had saved on my own, they eventually came around."
As China fully transitions to digital ticketing, paper train tickets will be phased out after September 30th this year. "The magnificent landscapes of our motherland are breathtaking. I am determined to finish my journey before September 30th. This will be something I can take pride in for the rest of my life."
