The Power of Education Across
Borders and Cultures
Writing a New Chapter in Global Education
with UWC Founding Schools
United World Colleges (UWC) is a unique global education organization that makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures from all over the world for a peace and sustainable future.
Since its founding in 1962, United World Colleges (UWC) has been dedicated to nurturing future leaders with global perspectives and a sense of social responsibility through its unique combination of academics and multicultural integration. Today, UWC has 18 schools and colleges on 4 continents across the globe, with a far-reaching impact that transcends national boundaries. Each UWC college is unique with its own distinct character based on region, local culture, and founding principles, while remaining faithful to UWC mission and values, offering students a wealth of opportunities for learning and growth.
UWC Atlantic College is based at St. Donats Castle, south Wales, in a 12th century castle set in 122 acres of woodland and farmland, with its own valley and seafront. Students from more than 150 countries and areas study and live together here at UWC Atlantic. The college offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme as formal curriculum, while also emphasising the importance of experiential learning, community service and outdoor activities.
As the very first college in the UWC system, UWC Atlantic College is not only the piorneer college of the UWC movement, but also the piorneer of the UWC ethos. It is also the first IB school in British history. The college co-created the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in 1968, which is now taught in over 40,000 schools worldwide with more than a million students enrolled.
With the development of the IB, UWC has maintained a close and long-standing partnership with the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), jointly developing innovative curricula and influencing global education standards. The Systems Transformation Pathway, designed in partnership with the International Baccalaureate, is an innovative educational approach currently being piloted at UWC Atlantic. Through new curricula and transformative learning experiences, UWC Atlantic College equips students with the skills to re-imagine the systems and drive change, nurturing innovative thinkers capable of addressing global challenges.
In the increasingly complex and fractured global environment, the role of education in bridging divides, fostering cross-cultural understanding, and promoting world peace has become more crucial than ever. The UWC ethos is increasingly valued in this context. The UWC community brings together unique and compassionate leaders to channel their energy, passion, voices, and perspectives to help deliver solutions and create a positive and lasting impact. These leaders learn to navigate today's complex challenges, contradictions, and conflicts, and are committed to providing solutions and making a difference.
When I think about the varying purposes of education and the impact it can have on society, none is more compelling and pressing for me than that of UWC.
—— Naheed Bardai, Principal of UWC Atlantic
The unique UWC global community is closely united in various forms, building peace and shaping a sustainable future through the young generation. The international network of 18 UWC schools, together with a global alumni community of over 60,000, endows UWC with a strong global response capability. Resource sharing and complementary strengths among campuses worldwide further enhance UWC's international influence. Inter-school cooperation and exchange not only demonstrate the cohesion of the UWC global community but also highlight the profound transformative power of the UWC movement.
Looking back at history, the connection between Chinese students and the United World Colleges (UWC) can be traced back to 1973, when Premier Zhou Enlai first sent 15 Chinese students to UWC Atlantic College in the UK for further studies. These students were the first group of Chinese students to study abroad after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Today, the latest strategic cooperation between CWA and UWC Atlantic College undoubtedly has groundbreaking significance. It is not only a continuation of the long-standing friendship but also a new expansion of the depth and breadth of Sino-British educational cooperation, reflecting the significance of education as a bridge for international understanding and cooperation.
As part of the UWC family, our cooperation with China has a long and storied history. The joining of CWA students has brought new vitality to our campus culture and offered us fresh perspectives. Our International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and Systems Transformation Pathway aim to cultivate students' global vision and awareness of sustainable development, encouraging them to confront global challenges and drive change in global systems. I look forward to welcoming more students from CWA to join us and write a new chapter in global education."

The Unique FP Bridge Program that
Incorporates the Best of the IB
Paving the Way to UWC Excellence for Students
In the era of AI, the significance of IB education has become increasingly prominent. It focuses on developing students' critical thinking, international perspective, and interdisciplinary skills, which align with the needs of the times and can effectively respond to the challenges of the future. The IB program does not only stop at the academic level but also emphasizes the development of students' ability to solve complex problems, which will help them to stay competitive in a fast-changing society.
The IB teaching philosophy of CWA is highly compatible with that of UWC Atlantic College, and both sides are committed to exploring more possibilities in education and cultivating future global change-makers. The unique FP bridge program in CWA and UWC Changshu has cultivated a group of outstanding students with global competence, and is able to send outstanding talents to 18 UWCs around the world.
In terms of curriculum, CWA offers a one-year Preparatory Program for the International Baccalaureate (FP) and a two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). The school is committed to providing an IB program that is tailored to the needs of Chinese students, with the concept of "tailor-made for local conditions". It has always been CWA's goal to develop the "Hexagonal Warriors" that the IB program aims to cultivate.
At the FP level, CWA implements individualized instruction for students. Through tiered teaching and small class sizes, an exclusive educational environment is created for each student. This instruction model not only helps students achieve academic breakthroughs but also enhances their language skills comprehensively, so that they can build a solid foundation for their future international academic path.
In its daily teaching, CWA incorporates a large number of practical and innovative elements, encouraging students to participate in interdisciplinary projects, Model United Nations, academic competitions, and other activities to hone their teamwork, self-management and critical thinking skills.
This cooperation between CWA and UWC Atlantic College is based on the results of the FP stage. In CWA’s FP stage, students have developed various core competencies through systematic learning. This not only lays a solid foundation for applying to UWC schools globally, but also provides special opportunities for applying to UWC Atlantic College. As a result, students gain access to a broader academic platform and enhanced opportunities for further development at UWC Atlantic College.
02
Injecting multicultural dynamism,
Continuously expanding the
depth and breadth of international cooperation

These schools bring together students from all over the world, with different cultural backgrounds and socioeconomic status, so that they can learn from and understand one another in a shared campus life. This environment helps them develop a global perspective and cross-cultural communication skills, ultimately empowering them to become the driving force behind world peace and sustainable development.
Following this cooperation, with more students from CWA joining the team, UWC Atlantic College will be more diverse and infused with cultural vitality. This will not only bring fresh energy into Sino-British educational exchanges, but also foster in-depth cooperation between the two countries in the areas of educational philosophies, teaching methodologies, and talent cultivation strategies.
