U.S. President Donald Trump said he will impose tariffs on Chinese exports to the US on January 21, with an expected start date of February 1. According to the New York Times, Trump also said that he planned to impose a 25 percent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico. Trump is wielding the tariff stick again.

As a response, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on January 22: "We have made clear China's position on this issue multiple times. We believe that there's no winner in a trade or tariff war, and we will firmly uphold our national interests."

Openness is the hallmark of Chinese modernization. According to China's General Administration of Customs, China's overall tariff level has been reduced to 7.3 percent, a fairly low level in the world. China gives all least developed countries having diplomatic relations with China zero-tariff treatment for 100 percent tariff lines. China has taken the initiative to expand imports and held the China International Import Expo for seven consecutive years. China has been the world's second-largest importer for many years now.
