The forest seemed alive, its towering trees swaying gently despite the still air. Maren clutched the compass tightly, her steps deliberate as she followed the quivering needle. The whispers grew louder, though she couldn’t make out the words.
“Maren, are you sure about this?” Alaric asked, his voice tense. He was scanning the shadows, as if expecting something to leap out at them.
“I don’t have a choice,” Maren replied. “This compass belonged to my mother. She left it for me to find... something.”
Alaric sighed, adjusting the strap of his satchel. “I just hope that ‘something’ isn’t trouble.”
As they ventured deeper, the forest began to change. The trees grew closer together, their trunks twisting unnaturally. The sunlight dimmed, and a thick fog rolled in, curling around their feet.
Suddenly, the compass needle spun wildly before settling on a narrow, overgrown path hidden between two massive oaks.
“This is it,” Maren said, her voice a mix of excitement and apprehension.
Alaric peered down the path, which seemed to vanish into the mist. “This doesn’t look like a good idea,” he muttered.
Ignoring his hesitation, Maren stepped forward, her heart pounding. The whispers grew clearer, their cadence rhythmic and almost melodic.
“What are they saying now?” Alaric asked, following reluctantly.
Maren hesitated before answering. “They’re saying, ‘Find the heart.’”
“The heart of what?”
Maren didn’t answer. She didn’t know—but she was determined to find out.
