Do you feel difficult to distinguish one flower-drum opera from another? In China, the Flower-drum Opera, or Huagu Opera, refers to a general name for local operas performed in several provinces. It has nearly 200 musical tunes, making it a Chinese opera genre with the most variations under a single name. The most prevalent one is the Hunan Flower-drum Opera which features folk origins and lively tunes. The Flower-drum Opera constantly employs fans and handkerchiefs as its common props, blending rural elements such as rowing and carrying loads on performers’ shoulders into its performances. It is celebrated as one of China’s traditional treasures.
