Burned into his mind forever.
After the war ended, Torahiko - like thousands of other war orphans - was picked up by Japanese relief workers and taken to a temporary shelter. It was a repurposed school building, crowded with children exactly like himself - sick, malnourished, and traumatized by two years of hell on earth.
Japan's Ministry of Education began a post-war education program that aimed to re-enroll orphans and war-displaced youth back into the school system. When Torahiko turned 16, he was granted placement in a public high school, along with temporary housing.
During his third year of high school, just as he was beginning to recover from the things he had seen and experienced during WW2, some of his female classmates began to mysteriously disappear. It wasn't long before people began whispering rumors of a serial killer at school.
Shortly after the graduation ceremony, one of his former classmates - Kataba Aishi - suddenly confessed her love to him with a long, heartfelt speech. She poured her heart out to him as if her life depended on it. Apparently, he meant the world to her.
He was deeply moved; three years ago, when he was wailing with despair while cradling his little sister's corpse, he never could have imagined that, one day, he would actually have a chance at a happy life. He accepted her confession without a second thought.
However, his happiness would be extremely short-lived. Only a few days after Kataba's confession, Torahiko found himself in a police station, being interrogated by a detective - and a foreign man who was apparently working for a branch of the United States government.
It turned out that the rumors of a serial killer were true - and Kataba Aishi was the culprit. Supposedly, Kataba had been murdering any girl who expressed even the slightest interest in dating Torahiko.
