Plant Direct is an open access, sound science journal committed to accelerating progress in the plant science field. The journal welcomes research across a wide range of topics including genetics, biochemistry, development, cell biology, biotic stress, abiotic stress, genomics, phenomics, bioinformatics, physiology, molecular biology, and evolution. It is a collaborative journal launched by the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB), the Society for Experimental Biology (SEB) and Wiley, and it supports the ASPB, SEB and wider plant science communities

Job Description

We are excited to be seeking a new Editor-in-Chief to build on the journal’s strong foundations and to continue developing Plant Direct as a core community resource. The Editor-in-Chief will be supported by an experienced team of Supervising Editors and Academic Editors (the Editorial Team), as well as an in-house Editorial Office based at Wiley.

The Editor-in-Chief will work with the Publisher, American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) and Society for Experimental Biology(SEB) to oversee the effective peer review of manuscripts, lead the journal’s Editorial Team and undertake initiatives for journal development.

The successful candidate will foster an equitable publishing environment by actively countering biases in the peer review process and editorial decisions; and they will ensure that the journal's policies and workflows promote inclusivity and reflect the diversity of the communities it serves.

The position of Editor-in-Chief on Plant Direct includes the following responsibilities:

Working with the Publisher, ASPB and SEB to maintain and implement a strategy for the development of the journal, to build on the successes of Plant Direct and ensure that the journal fulfils its aims and serves the readers in its field.

Maintaining high editorial standards in the peer-review process and ensuring that the journal adheres to best practice guidance with respect to research integrity and publishing ethics in accordance with COPE (Committee on Publishing Ethics) guidelines.

Leading the Editorial Team to ensure contributions to the journal are peer reviewed by appropriately qualified and experienced persons, and that authors receive timely and constructive feedback.

Working with the Wiley Editorial Office on the day-to-day operations of the journal in an efficient manner.

Communicating regularly with the Editorial Team concerning the development of the journal, editorial strategy, submissions, and promotion.

Lead regular editorial meetings with the Editorial Team (ideally quarterly), in collaboration with the Publisher, ASPB and SEB.

Reviewing and renewing the Editorial Team to achieve an active and holistic representation of the community the journal serves, mentoring new members as needed.

Work collaboratively with the Editor-in-Chiefs of the supporter journals to encourage papers to be referred to Plant Direct.

Assisting the Publisher, ASPB and SEB by promoting the journal wherever possible through professional contacts and at conferences.

Plant Direct is jointly owned by ASPB, SEB and Wiley, and is published by Wiley. The Editor-in-Chief will be expected to contribute to and attend Plant Direct Management Committee meetings where possible.

A high level of professional and ethical standards and a commitment to ensuring the journal maintains a high level of scholarly rigor in the field.

Experience in editorial decision making with astute editorial judgment in the evaluation of research publication.

Active in the field with a good record of personal research, initiative, expertise and performance.

A flexible and collaborative working style. Keen to work in partnership with the Publisher, ASPB, SEB and the Editorial Team.

A willingness to contribute ideas for editorial initiatives and development and the capacity to lead established programs.

Awareness of changes in the research publishing environment and of relevant technological advances in the publication and dissemination of research.

Determination to pursue equity and diversity in all dimensions.
