The eastern and central routes of the mega project, which diverts water from the water-rich south to the water-scarce north, went into operation December 12, 2014. To date, this project has significantly altered the unbalanced spatial and temporal distribution of water resources in China.
Up to now, the project has supplied water to 45 large and medium-sized cities along its route, benefiting a population of 185 million. As related projects continue to advance, the scope of beneficiaries is expanding from urban areas to rural regions, with the number of people benefiting increasing year by year.
At the same time, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project has also significantly improved the ecological environment in the northern regions through measures such as water source replacement and ecological replenishment.(By Li Zi’ang/China Youth Daily)
