Sun Yao, Party Secretary of the Beijing Investment Promotion Bureau, delivered opening remarks, emphasising the importance of enhanced cooperation between Beijing and London amid a rapidly evolving global tech landscape. He noted that as the capital of China, Beijing’s economy continues to show strong momentum. In 2024, the city’s total GDP reached 5 trillion yuan, and per capita GDP stood at £23,400—ranking first in China and on par with mid-level developed economies globally.

Beijing has long been a preferred destination for foreign investment. As of the end of 2024, investors from over 165 countries and regions had established approximately 49,000 foreign-invested enterprises in the city. In 2024 alone, 2,012 new foreign-invested firms were registered, representing a 16.4% year-on-year increase. Over the past five years, Beijing attracted £49.7 billion in foreign capital. Among that, 192 UK-invested enterprises were established in Beijing with a total investment of £350 million.

(BAESL), Rolls-Royce’s first MRO joint venture in China.

Several prominent British brands have chosen Beijing as a launchpad into the Chinese market. Brompton, the classic British folding bicycle brand, has opened its first global flagship store in Beijing. Overtone, a premium craft beer brand, launched its first store in China in the capital. Iceland Foods, the UK’s largest frozen food retailer, established its first Asia-Pacific store in Beijing. The city looks forward to welcoming even more UK brands to open their first stores in Beijing and expand their footprint in the Chinese market.

Jack Perry, Chairman of the 48 Group Club, praised Beijing’s unique position as a launchpad for cross-border collaboration, stating that Beijing is where policy and technology intersect. He highlighted how various districts in the city are advancing innovation: Yizhuang is pioneering new industrial systems; Xicheng is integrating AI into finance and governance; Changping is developing scalable clean energy models; and Chaoyang continues to serve as a bridge to global markets. According to Perry, these are not experiments—they are functioning systems.

Perry also announced he would lead a delegation of top UK companies to Beijing for the 48 Group AI+ Forum from May 19 to 21, working with government ministries, district governments, leading zones, and private-sector leaders in AI, energy, infrastructure, and health.These are not speculative ideas, he emphasised—they are actionable projects supported by policy, investment frameworks, and clear mutual benefit. Based on his observations, Beijing continues to be the ideal place to launch the next generation of meaningful international cooperation.
