On March 31st, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced the discovery of the Huizhou 19-6 oilfield, a billion-ton

On March 31st, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced the discovery of the Huizhou 19-6 oilfield, a billion-ton oilfield located in the eastern South China Sea. This marks China's first large-scale integrated clastic oilfield discovered in deep to ultra-deep layers.

The "Nanhai No. 2" drilling platform is conducting drilling operations

Situated in the Huizhou Sag of the Pearl River Mouth Basin (PRMB), the Huizhou 19-6 oilfield is approximately 170 kilometers from Shenzhen, with an average water depth of 100 meters. Test drilling has shown a daily output of 413 barrels of crude oil and 68,000 cubic meters of natural gas. Continued exploration efforts have confirmed geological reserves exceeding one billion tons of oil equivalent.

In offshore oil and gas exploration, formations buried deeper than 3,500 meters are classified as deep layers, while those beyond 4,500 meters are considered ultra-deep. Exploration in these layers faces multiple challenges, including high temperatures, high pressure, and complex fluid conditions. Clastic rock formations serve as key reservoirs for deep-sea oil and gas, yet their low permeability makes the discovery of large-scale reserves difficult.

In recent years, newly added oil and gas reserves worldwide, including those in China, have primarily come from deep layers. Compared with shallow and mid-depth layers, deep formations feature higher temperatures, greater pressure, higher hydrocarbon maturity, and closer proximity to source rocks, making them more conducive to the generation of natural gas and light crude oil. With abundant resources and low exploration maturity, deep formations represent a crucial frontier for future oil and gas reserves and production growth.
